If you’re new to pickleball, the first thing you’ll notice is this:
There are way too many paddles.
Every product page says:
- “Maximum spin”
- “Elite control”
- “Pro-level performance”
- “Revolutionary carbon face”
It feels like buying a laptop.
But here’s the truth:
For your first paddle, most of that doesn’t matter.
This guide will help you choose your first pickleball paddle confidently — without overpaying or buying something that doesn’t fit your game.
Step 1: Ignore the Hype
As a beginner, your biggest needs are:
- A forgiving sweet spot
- Good control
- Comfortable grip
- Durability
You do not need:
- The exact paddle a pro uses
- The most expensive carbon fiber on the market
- Extreme spin technology
Your skill development matters more than micro-spec differences.
Step 2: Choose the Right Weight
Most paddles fall between:
- 7.3 – 7.8 oz (lighter)
- 7.8 – 8.4 oz (midweight)
For beginners, midweight is usually ideal.
Why?
- More stability
- Less twisting on off-center hits
- More forgiveness
Unless you have wrist or elbow issues, midweight is a safe bet.
Step 3: Thickness Matters More Than You Think
You’ll usually see:
- 14mm paddles → More pop, faster hands
- 16mm paddles → More control, softer feel
If you’re just starting out?
Go 16mm.
Control builds confidence. Confidence builds skill.
Power can come later.
Step 4: Grip Size Is Often Overlooked
Standard grip circumference is around 4.125” – 4.25”.
Most adults fit standard grips just fine.
If you’re unsure:
- Smaller grip = more wrist action
- Larger grip = more stability
When in doubt, go standard and adjust with overgrip if needed.
Step 5: Don’t Overpay for Your First Paddle
Here’s something most retailers won’t say:
You don’t need a $250 paddle to enjoy pickleball.
For most beginners, the sweet spot is:
- $90–$160 range
- Carbon or composite face
- 16mm core
- Midweight
That’s enough performance to grow into without limiting you.
