Pickleball Doubles Strategy: How to Win More Games as a Team

Whether you're new to pickleball or looking to take your doubles game to the next level, mastering strategy is just as important as having the right gear. Doubles is the most common way to play pickleball—and it's also the most dynamic. With four players on the court, teamwork, positioning, and communication can make or break the match.

1. Control the Kitchen Line

One of the golden rules of doubles pickleball: own the net. Getting both players to the non-volley zone (kitchen line) early puts you in a dominant position. From there, you can cut off angles, control the pace, and keep your opponents on the defensive. The key? A deep return of serve followed by a quick advance to the kitchen.

2. Communicate Constantly

Great doubles teams talk throughout the match. Call shots ("Mine!", "Yours!", "Out!") and help each other track lobs and dinks. Consistent communication prevents confusion and ensures you cover the court effectively.

3. Stack Strategically

Stacking is a technique where players stay on the same side after the serve or return to keep a stronger player in a preferred position (like forehand in the middle). If you’re left-handed or your partner is significantly stronger at the net, stacking might give your team a winning edge.

4. Play Smart, Not Just Hard

While it’s tempting to crush every ball, doubles is more about patience and precision. Learn to dink consistently, use drop shots to move your opponents out of position, and aim for your opponents’ feet or the middle of the court to create confusion.

5. Target the Weaker Player (Tactfully)

It’s common (and smart) to direct more shots toward the less consistent player. If one opponent has a weaker backhand or struggles at the net, make them play more balls—without being unsportsmanlike, of course.

6. Move as a Unit

Imagine you and your partner are connected by a rope. When one moves, the other should shift with them. This keeps your coverage balanced and prevents open gaps down the middle or near the sidelines.
